XL Recordings History — From Rave to Independent Major
XL began as a rave imprint — early releases in the hardcore and breakbeat techno tradition, distributed through Beggars Banquet. The label's direction shifted through the 1990s: Prodigy's Music for the Jilted Generation (1994) and The Fat of the Land (1997) established XL as capable of combining commercial success with formal ambition. Through the 2000s the label diversified while maintaining its independent status — signing Radiohead for In Rainbows (2007), Adele for 19 and 21, Vampire Weekend. The electronic music dimension continued in parallel: Arca's Xen (2014), the KiCk series (2021), Overmono's Good Lies (2023).

The current XL electronic roster represents two distinct approaches to the same formal territory. Arca — Alejandra Ghersi — brings an avant-garde, genre-dissolving approach: the KiCk series of five albums (2021) moved between reggaeton, industrial noise, ambient and pop abstraction within a single release schedule. Overmono — Tom and Ed Russell — combine club functionality with melodic ambition: Good Lies (2023) was one of the most commercially successful experimental electronic albums of recent years.
