Ninja Tune Records — The London Label That Defined Independent Electronic Music

UK Bass & Electronics · Updated May 2026

Ninja Tune was founded in London in 1990 by Coldcut — Matt Black and Jonathan More — and has since become the most significant independent electronic music label in the UK. Its roster across three decades includes Bonobo, Floating Points, Bicep, Caribou, Actress and dozens of others who have defined the sound of UK independent electronic music.

Origins: Coldcut and the Independent Vision

Coldcut formed Ninja Tune specifically to control their own music after negative experiences with major labels — a decision that turned the label into one of the most creatively independent operations in UK music. The early Ninja Tune aesthetic was defined by trip-hop, downtempo and the abstract hip-hop sound that was emerging from Bristol and London simultaneously: Funki Porcini, Hex and the early Coldcut records established a template of sample-based music with jazz and world music influences that would define the label's output for the following decade. The visual language of the early releases — graphic design by the Me Company and others — was as distinctive as the music: the Ninja Tune aesthetic was legible across its entire catalogue in a way that few independent labels have managed.

The Contemporary Roster

Bonobo joined Ninja Tune in 2003 and has become the label's most commercially successful artist — Migration (2017) won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Floating Points' debut Elaenia (2015) brought jazz-electronic complexity to the roster. Bicep' debut (2017) and Isles (2021) both charted at the top of the UK Albums Chart. Caribou has been on the label's distribution network for key releases. The breadth of the contemporary Ninja Tune catalogue — from the ambient jazz of Floating Points to the rave electronics of Bicep — reflects a curatorial intelligence that has expanded the label's original trip-hop aesthetic without losing its identity.

Ninja Tune's Legacy

Ninja Tune's contribution to UK electronic music is institutional as well as artistic — the label demonstrated that independent electronic music could be commercially viable, critically respected and formally adventurous simultaneously. The Ninja Tune catalogue is one of the most consistently high-quality bodies of releases in UK music.
