Fred again.. Albums Ranked — Actual Life and the Complete Discography

UK Bass & Electronics · Updated May 2026

Fred again.. has released three Actual Life studio albums between 2021 and 2022, plus the live document Ten Days (2023). Frederick Gibson's output is among the most emotionally direct and formally distinctive in contemporary UK electronic music — a system of diary entries compressed into club tracks. Here is every record ranked.

Fred again.. Albums — Ranked

Pre-Album: Production Work (2014–2020)

Before the Actual Life series, Gibson spent six years as one of the most sought-after co-writers and producers in UK music — working with Ed Sheeran, BTS, Headie One and others. This period is essential context: the production intelligence evident on the Actual Life records was built during years of working at the highest level of commercial music before he applied it to his own project.

#4 — Ten Days (2023)

A live record drawn from his sold-out Madison Square Garden shows — not an album of new material but a document of the Actual Life live show at its peak. Essential if you want to understand how the recorded music translates to a live context; not an entry point for new listeners. Reference track: "Danielle (smile on my face)" live.

#3 — Actual Life (April 14 — December 17 2020) — Atlantic / 2021

The debut Actual Life album — its full title marking the specific period of Gibson's life it documents — introduced the format: field recordings, voice notes and sonic fragments from real conversations and experiences, processed and layered into electronic music that carries the emotional weight of the original material. Less refined than the records that followed but establishing the system completely. Reference track: "Kyle (i found you)".

#2 — Actual Life 2 (February 2 — October 15 2021) — Atlantic / 2022

The second instalment deepened the vocabulary of the first — more confident production, more emotionally complex material, the Actual Life framework applied with greater precision. "Bleu (better with time)" and "Delilah (pull me out of this)" are among the best tracks across the series. The Boiler Room collaboration between AL2 and AL3 confirmed Gibson's place in the UK electronic mainstream without compromising what made the records distinctive. Reference track: "Bleu (better with time)".

#1 — Actual Life 3 (January 1 — September 9 2022) — Atlantic / 2022

The most complete realisation of the Actual Life format — the most emotionally varied, the most sonically refined, the best-sequenced. Actual Life 3 applies the principles of the first two records with complete confidence: every element, from the voice note fragments to the sub-bass weight, has exactly the weight it needs. "Danielle (smile on my face)" is the defining Fred again.. track. Reference track: "Danielle (smile on my face)".

Where to Start

Start with Actual Life 3 — it is the most complete realisation of the format. Then go back to AL1 to hear the system being established. For the live experience: the Madison Square Garden sets on YouTube are essential context.
